Biography

After graduating from film school, Staffordshire-born Andrew Gunn embarked upon a career in television as a member of the camera crew. Eager to direct, he made a number of short films starting in the late Eighties, and would occasionally take on the duties of writer and producer as well. Gunn's first taste of work as a television director came on the sitcom Green Wing in 2003; although he did not wind up earning an on-screen acknowledgment, he made substantial contributions to its visual style. As it turned out, Gunn had to wait until the following year to earn his first directing credit, on an episode of Coming Up. He worked steadily as a director throughout the remainder of the decade, on programmes such as Life On Mars, Primeval and Survivors.

Gunn was then recruited for two Doctor Who stories during Matt Smith's first season as the Eleventh Doctor, broadcast in 2010. The Beast Below introduced Sophie Okonedo's memorable monarch, Liz 10, while Victory Of The Daleks launched a controversial redesign of its eponymous monsters. The Beast Below also provided Gunn with the opportunity to work with his children, Iola and Olen, who played two of the pupils in the opening scene. Amongst his credits during the remainder of the decade were Waterloo Road, Wild At Heart, Wolfblood, and more than two dozen episodes of Hollyoaks. In the Twenties, Gunn directed several installments of the youth-oriented thriller Get Even.
