Annetta Laufer launched her professional career during the early 2000s with work as a script supervisor. In this capacity, she earned credits on shows like Feather Boy and My Almost Famous Family, as well as movies including 28 Weeks Later. Laufer also began making short films and, in 2013, she founded Roman Candle Productions with an aim to focus on movies which highlighted the experiences of women and the black community. She continued to work occasionally as a script supervisor and in other production roles, such as on the movies Blue Story and Boxing Day. But the critical acclaim being garnered by Laufer's short films led to opportunities to direct for television, the first being the 2022 Doctor Who New Year's Day special, Eve Of The Daleks, featuring Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor. She subsequently made episodes of the crime drama Get Millie Black.
