Biography

Bristol-born Clayton Hickman began working in the periodicals industry in 1999, and joined the staff of Doctor Who Magazine as its assistant editor a year later. He soon formed a writing partnership with Gareth Roberts, and together they contributed the Fourth Doctor short story The Not-So-Sinister Sponge to the Short Trips And Side Steps anthology, published by BBC Books in 2000. In 2001 and 2002, the pair scripted two comedic audio plays for Big Finish Productions: the Sixth Doctor adventure The One Doctor and Bang-Bang-A-Boom! featuring the Seventh Doctor. A skilled graphic designer, Hickman began providing cover artwork for Big Finish, as well as for the Doctor Who DVD range from BBC Video; his repertoire would subsequently expand beyond Doctor Who. In 2002, he was promoted to editor of Doctor Who Magazine, a post he would hold for five and a half years. In this capacity, Hickman made frequent media appearances -- especially following Doctor Who's 2005 television revival -- including a role as a judge on the children's reality show Totally Doctor Who during its 2006 season.

Another Hickman-Roberts collaboration was From Raxacoricofallapatorius With Love..., a mini-episode which paired characters from the Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures with comedy legend Ronnie Corbett, for broadcast as part of the 2009 Comic Relief charity appeal. The following year, Hickman had the opportunity to tackle a full-length serial for The Sarah Jane Adventures; the season finale, Goodbye, Sarah Jane Smith, again saw him teaming with Roberts. The duo was in the process of developing “Meet Mr Smith”, a story for the 2011 season of The Sarah Jane Adventures, when the programme was brought to a sudden end by the death of series star Elisabeth Sladen. Instead, Hickman would go on to provide two stories -- working solo, in these instances -- for Wizards Vs Aliens, the programme which was developed to replace The Sarah Jane Adventures.
