Colm McCarthy was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. His television career began during the Nineties, when he was an assistant director on Mystic Knights Of Tir Na Nog. McCarthy became a fully-fledged director around the turn of the century, with No Frontiers amongst his early credits; he also wrote and directed the short film The Making Of A Prodigy. Work on episodic television followed later in the decade, including Footballers Wive$: Extra Time, Murphy's Law, The Tudors and Spooks. 2010 saw the release of Outcast, a horror movie he directed and co-scripted, which included a role for Karen Gillan, who was then playing Doctor Who companion Amy Pond.

McCarthy himself earned a credit on Doctor Who in 2013, when he directed The Bells Of Saint John, the first story to bring together Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor and the modern-day version of Jenna-Louise Coleman's time-splintered companion, Clara Oswald. His other work during the decade included episodes of Injustice, Endeavour, Sherlock and Peaky Blinders. His second feature film was 2016's The Girl With All The Gifts with Glenn Close. As the 2010s drew to a close, McCarthy began earning executive producer credits for some of his directorial outings, including the Superman prequel Krypton and Curfew. During the Twenties, he again worked in both capacities on The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself.
