Ella Road completed an honours Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Oxford University, after which she undertook a Masters of Arts in acting at the Oxford School of Drama. She appeared in a number of plays and short films, as well as the 2018 movie Winter Ridge. However, Road had now become interested in the writing process, and she garnered considerable critical praise for her debut play, The Phlebotomist, in 2018. She participated in the BBC's Television Drama Writers' Programme in 2019 and developed her second stage script, Fair Play, which premiered to acclaim in 2021. The following year, Road wrote two episodes of Ten Percent and collaborated with Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall on Legend Of The Sea Devils, the penultimate adventure for Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor.
