Haolu Wang was born in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province, China. She pursued her undergraduate education at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, from which she graduated in 2010 with a double major in government and economics. Wang went to work at an investment bank in Hong Kong, but her life changed after she watched the classic Ingmar Bergman film Persona. Realising that she wanted to be a filmmaker, she taught herself enough to gain entry to the National Film and Television School in the United Kingdom. In the process of earning a Masters of Arts degree in directing fiction, Wang wrote and directed a number of short films, including 2019's critically-acclaimed The Pregnant Ground. She was then recruited for her first television project: the 2022 Doctor Who special Legend Of The Sea Devils, with Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor.
