Biography

Born circa 1988 in Shotton Colliery, County Durham, Jamie Childs enrolled at the London College of Music and Film to study sound engineering. In 2008, he entered a contest to create a video which could be used to promote Patricia Cornwell's novel Book Of The Dead. Childs bested a field of two hundred competitors, and the acclaim led to steady work in commercials. Seeking to branch out into drama, he worked as a production coordinator on First Cut in 2009, after which he made a number of short films and was a second unit director on programmes such as The Seasoning House and Poldark. Childs' first assignment as a fully-fledged director came on Vera in 2016.

The following year, Childs was recruited for Doctor Who to help launch Jodie Whittaker's tenure as the Thirteenth Doctor. He initially directed the special video which revealed the identity of the new series star; it was broadcast immediately after the Gentlemen's Final of that year's Wimbledon tennis tournament. Childs then made Whittaker's debut adventure, The Woman Who Fell To Earth, and three other stories for the 2018 season. His last Doctor Who work came on that year's finale, The Battle Of Ranskoor Av Kolos. Around the same time, Childs handled episodes of Lucky Man and Next Of Kin.

Following his Doctor Who assignments, Childs was both an executive producer and a director on two major fantasy projects: Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials and the Neil Gaiman comic book adaptation The Sandman. More genre work followed as he directed episodes of Willow, the television sequel to the treasured family film.
