Biography

John Shiban earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Screenwriting from the American Film Institute. He joined the writing staff of The X-Files in 1995, and he would eventually become both a producer and a director on the programme. He and his wife, Janet, had a son named William, who appeared on-screen as the baby of paranormal investigator Dana Scully in a 2001 episode. Shiban moved on to writing and production roles on shows like the Star Trek spin-off Enterprise, Supernatural, Legend Of The Seeker and Breaking Bad. He also produced occasional movies, such as Otis and Alien Raiders.

In 2011, Shiban contributed two episodes to the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood, which was then being made as a co-production between the BBC and Starz, an American network. He collaborated with Jim Gray on Escape To LA and took a solo writing credit on The Middle Men; he was also acknowledged as a co-executive producer on both installments. Shiban's subsequent work during the 2010s included Hell On Wheels, Da Vinci's Demons and Shut Eye. He continued to direct as well, not only on programmes with which he was involved in other capacities, but also on the likes of Better Call Saul and NOS4A2. During the Twenties, Shiban was a writer and executive producer on Ozark.
