Biography

Jonny Campbell studied French and German at Durham University before joining Granada Television, where he initially worked on documentaries. In 1997, he directed Peter Kay's debut television appearance in an episode of New Voices. Before the decade was through, Campbell was working on The Bill and Peak Practice. His directorial career took off after the turn of the century: Campbell re-teamed with Kay on Phoenix Nights, and also worked on shows such as Judge John Deed, Shameless and Ashes To Ashes. In 2006, he made his first movie, Alien Autopsy, which starred the comedy duo Ant & Dec.

For Matt Smith's first season as the Eleventh Doctor in 2010, the Doctor Who production team was keen to bring aboard directors who had never before worked on the programme. As it happened, Campbell was dating executive producer Beth Willis, so he was a natural candidate. Campbell wound up overseeing a rare overseas location shoot, with filming taking place in Croatia. The two episodes he directed included the acclaimed Vincent And The Doctor, which sensitively explored the mental illness suffered by renowned artist Vincent Van Gogh. Amongst Campbell's other credits during the 2010s were episodes of In The Flesh, The Casual Vacancy, The Last Post and Informer. He and Willis were married in 2013. Campbell's work during the Twenties included an installment of Dracula, which was co-created by former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat.
