Ken Grieve was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and planned to be a lecturer in philosophy before instead finding employment as a cameraman with Granada Television. Grieve became highly sought after and eventually moved into directing, initially on Coronation Street in 1974. Other work at Granada included The XYY Man and This Year Next Year. Grieve went freelance around 1977 and directed episodes of The Omega Factor and Crown Court before agreeing to make Destiny Of The Daleks for Doctor Who, starring Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor.

During the Eighties, Grieve worked on programmes such as Strangers, Chessgame, Bulman and Game, Set, And Match. He remained prolific during the Nineties, directing for programmes including Bergerac, Bugs, Cadfael and Peak Practice. Following the turn of the century, he was responsible for no fewer than eighteen episodes of The Bill, alongside shows like Night & Day, The Royal and Casualty.

Grieve's final work was an episode of Law & Order: UK in 2009. Around this time, he was diagnosed with myeloma, which prompted his retirement from directing. Nonetheless, he continued to mentor young filmmakers in his native Edinburgh until his death on November 15th, 2016. Grieve was predeceased by his wife, Fiona Mouat; they were survived by their children Simon, Ben, Charlotte and Dee.
