Lawrence Gough was born in England, but spent much of his childhood in various parts of the United States. Although he initially set out to be an actor, his interests shifted behind the camera, and he wrote and directed a number of short films starting with 2003's Beating The Dog. Gough's first television work came as both a writer and director on the Irish docudrama series Marú; he would also work on the English remake, In Cold Blood. He made his feature film debut as the director and co-writer of the horror movie Salvage, which starred future Madame Vastra actress Neve McIntosh.

Gough moved into television drama with writing and directing assignments on Saor Sinn o Olc for Irish television, before he amassed several British credits as the director of shows like Hollyoaks, Misfits and Atlantis. It was his work on the latter that brought him to the attention of the Doctor Who team. Gough made the 2016 mini-episode Friend From The Future that introduced Pearl Mackie's Bill Potts as the new companion to Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor. He then directed the first two stories for the 2017 season, including Bill's official debut in The Pilot. Gough would subsequently work on programmes such as The Aliens and Snatch. During the Twenties, he directed for shows like Bancroft, The Last Bus and The Gold.
