Entering the television industry in the mid-2000s, Maxine Exley originally worked as a script editor on Emmerdale. The programme eventually provided her with the opportunity to write starting in 2013, and she wound up contributing more than one hundred scripts. Now married to director Neil Alderton, she wrote for the revival of The Worst Witch, after which she was invited to develop an adventure for Doctor Who. The result was 2020's atmospheric historical The Haunting Of Villa Diodati, which featured Frankenstein author Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (later Shelley). Alderton then collaborated with showrunner Chris Chibnall on Village Of The Angels, the fourth installment of 2021's season-long Flux.
