Biography

Patrick Malcolm “Pat” Dunlop began his career writing for radio, before moving to BBC Television as a staff writer. His early work included episodes of Dixon Of Dock Green and United!; he was also the story editor of Dr Finlay's Casebook. In March 1966, Doctor Who story editor Gerry Davis and scientific consultant Kit Pedler had devised ideas for a serial which would eventually become The War Machines. Dunlop was assigned to transform their storyline into a set of scripts, but soon asked to be removed from the project in order to become the script consultant on Dixon Of Dock Green. Ian Stuart Black replaced him.

Dunlop went on to create The Revenue Men and he contributed to shows like Z Cars, Joe 90 and General Hospital. He wrote briefly for American television, including episodes of Vega$ and Fantasy Island around 1980. Dunlop also wrote the screenplay for the 1985 martial arts movie Heroes Three. His career began to draw to a close around 1990, when he scripted an episode of The Bill.

Dunlop was married to Marion Metcalfe. Their daughter Lesley became an actress; during the Eighties, she twice appeared in Doctor Who, as Norna in Frontios and Susan Q in The Happiness Patrol.
