Interested in theatre from a young age, Paul Joyce wrote and directed plays and, in the late Sixties, began making short films. In 1976, his first television script was an episode of Crown Court. This was followed by a 1980 edition of Play For Today called Keep Smiling, which Joyce both wrote and directed. It was seen by Doctor Who producer John Nathan-Turner, who recruited Joyce to direct Warriors' Gate for Tom Baker's final season as the Fourth Doctor. Unfortunately, what ensued was a difficult and chaotic production. Not only did Joyce and script editor Christopher H Bidmead find themselves making major changes to writer Steve Gallagher's scripts, but Joyce experienced a number of issues which led to production assistant Graeme Harper handling parts of the recording.

The situation resulted not only in Joyce being barred from returning to Doctor Who, but also in his departure from television drama altogether. Joyce subsequently formed Lucida Productions, which focussed on documentaries. In 1984, he directed and co-wrote the movie Summer Lightning with Paul Scofield and David Warner. Joyce also developed an accomplished portfolio as a painter and photographer, while publishing several associated books.
