Biography

Having cultivated an interest in performance during his childhood in Bolton, Lancashire, Paul Murphy attended film school, and then took a lecturing position at the University of Salford in Greater Manchester. Meanwhile, in 1994, he co-founded a multimedia performance company called the Chameleons Group, which developed stage shows that seamlessly integrated live actors and pre-recorded content. Around the turn of the century, Murphy began making short films like the critically-acclaimed I'm Frank Morgan, and he was soon recruited to work on the soap opera Brookside. Over the next few years, Murphy directed shows like Hollyoaks, Trexx And Flipside, more than a dozen episodes of Grange Hill, and twice as many installments of Casualty, on which he was also briefly a producer.

During the 2010s, Murphy earned directing credits on programmes such as Trollied and Wizards Vs Aliens before joining Doctor Who for its 2014 season. He made two early adventures for Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor: Robot Of Sherwood and The Caretaker. Other work during the decade included Cuckoo and Home From Home, while Murphy also began to tackle assignments on American television, such as the fantasy series Galavant and the sitcom American Housewife. In the Twenties, he was both a director and an executive producer on Red Election and North Sea Connection.
