A lifelong Doctor Who fan, Pete McTighe got his professional break on Neighbours in 2008; over a six-year span, he was involved with more than one hundred episodes as a writer, storyliner or story editor. He also wrote various liner notes for the Doctor Who DVD range from BBC Video and 2|entertain. In the early 2010s, McTighe provided scripts for shows like EastEnders, Crownies, Tricky Business and Winners & Losers. In 2013, he scored a major hit with the prison drama Wentworth, on which he was the lead writer. McTighe also contributed to programmes including The Doctor Blake Mysteries and Glitch.

In 2018, McTighe renewed his involvement with Doctor Who in two significant ways. First, he became a consultant on the new Blu-ray range devoted to the show's twentieth-century run. In this capacity, he not only developed written material, but was also responsible for extensive promotional trailers which often saw prominent castmembers reprising their original characters. Furthermore, McTighe achieved his longtime ambition to write for televised Doctor Who, with Kerblam! placing Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor in the midst of a futuristic send-up of online giant Amazon. He also scripted 2020's Praxeus, and he was earmarked for a slot in the 2021 run as well, until the COVID-19 pandemic prompted the decision to reformat the season as the six-part Flux.

During the Twenties, McTighe was an executive producer on A Discovery Of Witches, for which he also wrote an episode. He then took the same role on two series of his own creation: The Pact and The Rising. In 2023, McTighe novelised Kerblam! for BBC Books. The same year, he contributed to the Tales From The TARDIS series on BBC iPlayer.
