Biography

Peter Hoar was a Doctor Who fan in his youth, and it fired his interest in how television programmes were made. In 1992, he graduated from Bournemouth University with a degree in media production and had a brief stint at London Weekend Television. Hoar then worked with the National Theatre Studio. before joining Peak Practice as a production runner. He quickly earned a promotion to location manager, and worked in this capacity until the early years of the twenty-first century, when Peak Practice director Terry McDonough started mentoring him. Hoar earned his first directing credit on a 2002 episode of Hollyoaks. Subsequent work during the decade included Grange Hill, Wire In The Blood and Mistresses.

Hoar fulfilled his childhood dream when he joined Doctor Who to direct 2011's A Good Man Goes To War, the pivotal mid-season finale in which Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor learned the true identity of the enigmatic River Song. Unfortunately, Hoar's experience was marred by a disagreement in post-production, and he did not return to the programme. He subsequently helped launch the mystery series Shetland and directed nine episodes of Da Vinci's Demons, including one for which he was also a producer. Hoar moved on to The Last Kingdom, and became a co-executive producer on its second season in 2017. This exposure helped attract work in America, including several programmes based on Marvel Comics super-heroes such as Daredevil.

Hoar was again both a director and an executive producer on episodes of The Umbrella Academy, as well as the critically-acclaimed It's A Sin, created by former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies. When Davies returned to Doctor Who, he recruited Hoar for two episodes to air in 2025, featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor.
