Biography

Reggie Yates was born in Archway, London and made his television debut at the age of eight, in a 1993 episode of the sitcom Desmond's. Other credits during the Nineties included Between The Lines and as a presenter on The Disney Club. After the turn of the century, Yates continued to divide his time between acting and hosting; he had regular roles on Grange Hill, UGetMe and The Crust (which he also created), and presented Top Of The Pops. He gained additional notice as a disc jockey, with his own show on BBC Radio One. In 2007, Yates appeared in three Doctor Who stories as Leo Jones, whose sister, Martha, was a companion of David Tennant's Tenth Doctor. However, his busy schedule meant that plans for a more prominent role in the 2007 season finale, The Sound Of Drums / Last Of The Time Lords, had to be curtailed. Yates then co-starred in the crime drama Trinity.

During the 2010s, Yates voiced the title character in the children's series Rastamouse, and hosted the early seasons of The Voice UK and Release The Hounds, amongst many other programmes. He wound down his radio show in 2012, having decided to refocus his career on documentary filmmaking. As a result, he worked on shows such as Reggie Yates' Extreme UK, while writing and directing a number of short films; the first of these was 2013's Patriarch, which starred Trevor Laird, who had played Leo's father, Clive, in Doctor Who. In 2017, Yates ceased hosting the annual Christmas edition of Top Of The Pops after apologising for anti-Semitic comments he had made on a podcast.

During the Twenties, Yates wrote the telefilm Make Me Famous, which drew on his involvement with reality programming. He then wrote and directed his first movie, the 2021 comedy Pirates, which included former Doctor Who companion Tosin Cole amongst its cast; he had previously appeared in two of Yates' short films.
