Sarah Hellings joined the BBC in 1970, and initially worked as a film editor. Her first experience as a director came on segments for the children's series Blue Peter. She then went freelance in the late Seventies, and directed episodes of Jackanory, Grange Hill and Juliet Bravo. Hellings' work on Angels attracted the notice of Doctor Who producer John Nathan-Turner, whom she had previously approached about directing an historical adventure. As such, he offered her 1985's The Mark Of The Rani, an adventure for Colin Baker's Sixth Doctor set during the Luddite uprisings of the nineteenth century. Hellings' credits during the remainder of the Eighties included Howards' Way and Boon. She was prolific during the Nineties, directing for shows like Forever Green, The Memoirs Of Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Finlay and Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married. Hellings wrapped up her television career with thirteen episodes of Midsomer Murders, the last of which was broadcast in 2008.
