London-born Nick Hurran spent two years working for the Royal National Theatre before he moved over to television in the early Eighties. Initially a floor manager on shows like Spooky and The Bill, early credits as a director came on Telly Addicts and Never The Twain. During the Nineties, Hurran directed two dozen episodes of both Big Break and Outside Edge. The latter part of the decade saw him work on movies like 1999's Virtual Sexuality. After the turn of the century, Hurran directed episodes of Take A Girl Like You, Bonekickers and the 2009 revival of The Prisoner. He was both a producer and director on The Last Detective.

Hurran made five Doctor Who stories featuring Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor. They included 2011's The Girl Who Waited, in which Karen Gillan had a double role as old and young versions of companion Amy Pond, and 2012's The Angels Take Manhattan, which saw the exit of Amy and Rory from the programme. Hurran's final Doctor Who assignment was nothing less than the fiftieth-anniversary special, The Day Of The Doctor, in 2013. Smith was joined by David Tennant's Tenth Doctor and a heretofore unknown Doctor played by John Hurt, captivating a massive worldwide audience. Hurran's other work during the 2010s included episodes of Me And Mrs Jones, Sherlock and Fortitude. He was a producer/director on Childhood's End, and then served as both an executive producer and director on Travelers and Altered Carbon. In the Twenties, Hurran again assumed both roles for Devils. He is married to producer Michele Buck; they have two children.
