Biography

Peter Moffatt was born in Newington, Kent. He planned to study drama, only to see this interrupted by the Second World War. Moffatt joined the Royal Air Force, but was shot down and imprisoned in the Nazis' Stalag Luft III. There he was a performer and director for theatrical productions organised to keep up morale. After he was liberated, Moffatt became involved with repertory theatre in Colchester, where he was mentored by former film actress Joan Kemp-Welch. They began a romantic relationship, and eventually married in 1959.

Moffatt made a number of television appearances during the late Forties and early Fifties, including the telefilm Frieda and episodes of Emil And The Detectives and Tales From Soho. In the mid-Fifties, Kemp-Welch began directing for television, and she persuaded Moffatt to follow her example. He initially worked as a floor manager and lyricist at Associated-Rediffusion before being given the chance to direct a 1960 episode of the children's series Small Time. Moffatt was soon busy on a variety of programmes such as Crane, No Hiding Place, Blackmail and Sexton Blake.

Moffatt declined three offers from Graham Williams to direct for Doctor Who

Moffatt's work in the Seventies included everything from Crime Of Passion to Harriet's Back In Town to Rooms to Within These Walls. On All Creatures Great And Small, he worked with production unit manager John Nathan-Turner, who became the producer of Doctor Who at the end of 1979. Moffatt had previously declined three offers from Nathan-Turner's predecessor, Graham Williams, to direct for Doctor Who, but he now agreed to handle the vampire story State Of Decay for Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor.

Moffatt went on to make three serials with Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, most notably the twentieth-anniversary special The Five Doctors in 1983. The following year, he was tasked with introducing Colin Baker's Sixth Doctor in The Twin Dilemma. Moffatt's last directorial outing on Doctor Who was another multi-Doctor adventure: The Two Doctors in 1985, during which he also made a brief on-camera appearance. Another cameo followed in 1988's Silver Nemesis.

Beyond Doctor Who, Moffatt's credits during the Eighties included episodes of Doom Castle, Juliet Bravo and EastEnders. He returned to All Creatures Great And Small for his final television work, aired in 1988. Moffatt died on October 21st, 2007.
